A man who stole an Audi A3 by using a crow bar to break into lockers at a South Yorkshire leisure centre has been jailed.
John James Green, of Rosemary Gardens, Bradford, targeted the Barnsley Metrodome on Queens Road between December 2016 and January 2017.
Sheffield Crown Court heard how Green took a crowbar into the leisure, covered by a towel, in a bid to gain access to the lockers in the facility.
On one occasion in December 2016, the 26-year-old forced open a locker at the leisure centre, taking two iPhone’s, a set of car keys and a wallet containing cash.
On the second occasion in January, Green used the same method to break into another locker, this time stealing the keys to an Audi A3, which he then took from the car park.
However, thanks to CCTV analysis and work to track the car, police were able to identify and arrest Green.
Detective Constable Scott Roberts, the investigating officer, said: “He took advantage of people who were enjoying time with their friends and family for his own selfish gain. I’m pleased that he is behind bars for his actions.”
Green pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing, and in addition to theft, was sentenced to driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
He was jailed for two years and 12 weeks in relation to the thefts at Crown Court yesterday.
