Man trapped as lamppost falls on car

A SOUTH Yorkshire man was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after a lamppost fell on to the car he was in - trapping him inside.

The 23-year-old, from Scawthorpe, Doncaster, was a passenger in a red Fiat Punto travelling along Doncaster Road, Denaby Main, when the car crashed into steel fencing and a lamppost.

Police said the lamppost fell on to the roof of the car - trapping the passenger inside until firefighters cut him free.

He was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where he was detained.

The driver of the car - a 21-year-old man from Denaby Main - was taken to hospital suffering from shock and slight injuries but was later released and arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Witnesses to the crash at 10.40pm on Saturday should call police on 0114 220 2020 and quote incident number 1,267 of March 5.

n Firefighters were called out to Sutton Hall Road, Carr Vale, Bolsover, north Derbyshire, after a Range Rover was found alight.

Police were alerted to the incident at 10.40pm on Saturday.

n A Vauxhall Corsa found burning on Cresswell Road, Darnall, Sheffield, had been deliberately set alight.

Firefighters were called to the scene and extinguished the flames.
