PART of a Sheffield suburb was cordoned off by police today after a man suffered serious head injuries in an assault.
South Yorkshire Police cordoned off a block of flats in Mawfa Avenue, Gleadless Valley, shortly after 8am.
A force spokeswoman said: “Police were called to reports of a serious assault at 8.10am today.
“It is believed a 28-year-old man from Gleadless Valley has sustained serious head injuries.
“The injured man has been taken to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.”
A 19-year-old neighbour said he was in his bedroom across the road from the flats when he heard shouting just after 8am.
He said: “I heard a lot of noise and I looked out of the window, which was open, and saw a guy being punched and kicked by three men in his flat.
“He was on the floor and all three were kicking his head. I don’t know how they got in or who they were.
“My next door neighbour sounded the alarm and called the police.
“We don’t know how the guy is, the police haven’t told us, but he took a bad beating.”
The teenager’s mother said the victim was a ‘quiet guy who comes and goes in his van and keeps himself to himself’.
She said: “It’s all a bit shocking really.”
Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “We’ve heard a lot of rumours flying around this morning but nobody really knows what happened and the police are keeping it very quiet.
“This sort of thing would have been unusual here at one time, but lately more things seem to be happening.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call police on 101 quoting incident number 153 of January 7.
