Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man was stabbed to death in the stairwell of a Sheffield block of flats.
Police rushed to Callow Mount in Gleadless Valley after the ambulance service was alerted just after 4am yesterday morning.
The man was pronounced dead a short time later.
A major police cordon was put in place around three blocks of flats on Callow Mount, while Callow Road was sealed off in both directions for several hours.
A white tent was erected outside the entrance to the apartment block and residents were asked to walk around the cordon if they wanted to leave their homes.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said extensive inquiries were taking place at the scene as officers began to investigate the circumstances leading up to the man’s death.
Many shocked residents woke to find the cordon already in place.
One 32-year-old man who lives opposite the high rise block of flats affected said he had awoken at 7.50am to find the tent erected and a crime investigation van right outside his door.
“This is the way the area is going, to be honest,” he said.
“I’ve lived here for about 18 months after previously living in Broomhall, Batemoor and on the Manor and I was expecting it to be quiet round here.
“But when I saw that this morning my first thought was that I want to get out of this area. I moved away from Sheffield for eight years and now I’m wishing I’d never come back, it’s just frightening.”
Mark Turner, 29, an NHS therapist who lives in nearby Fleury Close, said it was the second violent death in the area within a matter of weeks.
“We are told when we visit patients in this area to come in twos, not alone,” he said.
“It’s an area where you have to look out for yourself. It’s actually a nice looking area, it’s some of the people who live here who spoil it.
“I’ve lived in Gleadless Valley for over a year now and there has been trouble on and off and you do hear about it being a hot spot for crime. It’s hard to explain why - but some people just get involved in mindless violence,” Mark added.
Mylene Abbott, aged 50, was barred by the road block as she tried to move her son into a flat on Callow Road.
“We arrived here at 9am this morning to find the road blocked and all the talk was that there had been a murder. The area has been sealed tight - it’s normally pretty quiet,” she said.
Two months ago Tracy Donnelly, aged 42, and her 23-year-old daughter Louise were stabbed to death at Tracy’s home in Ironside Road, Gleadless.
Rekawt Mahmood Salih, 25, of Callow Mount, Gleadless Valley, Sheffield, has been charged with both women’s murders and is remanded in custody awaiting trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
n Another stabbing took place in the Gleadless Valley at around 9.30pm on Saturday night.
A man suffered knife wounds to the throat and was taken to the Northern General Hospital where his condition was described as “serious but stable”.
Police said they weren’t sure of the exact location of the incident but enquiries were ongoing.
A force spokesman said: “There is nothing to suggest it is connected to the Callow Mount murder.”
Two men have been arrested.
n Anyone with information about the murder is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020 quoting incident number 232 of Sunday, May 29.
