A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of a South Yorkshire shopkeeper.

Naeem Mehmood, aged 27, of Herringthorpe Valley Road, Rotherham, was charged on Thursday night over the death of 40-year-old Parvaiz Hussain Iqbal, who was stabbed to death in his family shop.

He appeared at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court yesterday and is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court next week.

Emergency services were called to a halal butcher’s shop in Grosvenor Road, Eastwood, shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, where the body of Mr Iqbal, a father-of-three, was found.

A post-mortem examination concluded he died of multiple stab wounds.

Another 40-year-old man, from Sheffield, was also injured in the shop attack. He is receiving hospital treatment and is in a stable condition.
