Man killed as car hits trees and overturns

A MAN has been killed after his car left the road, collided with trees, and rolled onto its roof in the early hours of yesterday.

The 26-year-old, who has not yet been named by police, was travelling in a yellow Fiat Punto towards Doncaster on the A19 when the vehicle left the carriageway to the nearside after a sweeping left-hand bend between the junctions with Sutton Road and the B1220 Askern Road.

After leaving the carriageway the Punto collided with a number of trees before landing on its roof.

Police said the driver was from the Scawsby area of Doncaster. He died at the scene after suffering multiple injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the collision at around 2.35am, or the manner in which the vehicle was being driven beforehand, is urged to call South York shire Police on 101 quoting incident 188 of November 13.

Meanwhile in Sheffield two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a woman was knocked down and killed on a pedestrian crossing near Sheffield city centre.

The 24-year-old woman, who has not yet been named by police, was making her way across Hanover Way ring road at a traffic light-controlled crossing when she was hit by a black Honda Civic.

She was knocked onto a verge by the side of the road and suffered fatal injuries.

The car had been travelling from the direction of the Brook Hill university roundabout towards the Moore Street roundabout near Ecclesall Road. The woman was crossing the road from the Broomhall side of the dual carriageway, near the new Sheffield Jesus Centre on Broomspring Lane, towards the city centre.

A 22-year-old man from Sheffield and a 23-year-old man from Nottingham, who were both in the Honda car, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Anyone who witnessed the tragedy, just before 10.30pm on Saturday, is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting 1,410 of November 12.
