A man has been jailed for an unprovoked attack in which he stabbed his victim in the head and neck in a Rotherham pub.

David Rimmington, aged 59, of Roughwood Road, Kimberworth Park has been jailed for six years at Sheffield Crown Court.

South Yorkshire Police said his victim was lucky to have survived the attack.

At around 8.25pm on May 9 2015, Rimmington stabbed a 59-year-old man in the Angel pub, Bridgegate, in Rotherham town centre.

The victim, who was with his wife and friends, was stabbed in the head and neck and required hospital treatment for his injuries.

Pub-goers rushed to the victim’s aid, wrestled the knife from Rimmington’s hand and held him until police arrived.

Rimmington will also serve three years on license following his release.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Alex Dorlin said: “This was an unprovoked and brutal assault on an unsuspecting man who was enjoying a night out with his loved ones.

“The victim is incredibly lucky that his injuries were not more severe, as this could very well have turned into a murder investigation.

“Rimmington’s actions, which were captured on CCTV, were shocking and I’m pleased he has accepted responsibility for his violent actions.”

Several members of the public and the pub landlord pulled Rimmington off his victim, tried to get the knife out of his hand and held him until police officers arrived.

“We’re very grateful for the support we have received from the local community and the pub-goers that evening throughout our investigation.

“They showed exceptional bravery in pulling Rimmington off his victim and holding him, putting themselves in danger to ensure the safety of other people in the pub.

“When our officers arrived, we were able to make a swift arrest and recover the knife used in the attack.

“Violent crime and the use of a knife to harm another person will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. We will take robust action against anyone involved in this type of criminality to bring them before the courts.”
