A man has been jailed for operating waste wood facilities in Sheffield without an environmental permit.

Christopher Theaker, of High Oakham Drive, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, who admitted the offence at Sheffield Crown Court was jailed for nine months, ordered to pay £80,000 in costs and had £250,000 confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act

The 49-year-old was prosecuted by the Environment Agency for operating four wood waste sites, under the company name Theaker Recycling, at Effingham Road Attercliffe, Clay Wheels Lane, Wadsley Bridge, and Station Road, Ecclesfield, all in Sheffield, and Sheepbridge Lane in Mansfield.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “We offered advice to Mr Theaker on a number of occasions to help him run his business legitimately while protecting the environment.

“Instead of working with us to do this, he chose to show blatant disregard for the law and moved his illegal activities from site to site.

“Not only did he undercut business competitors who operate legally, his activities adversely impacted a number of communities.”
