Man hurt in car smash

A MAN was seriously injured when his car ran off a South Yorkshire road, hit a lamppost and ended up in a field.

The 34-year-old, from Huddersfield, was driving a Vauxhall Astra along Whams Road, Crow Edge, near Barnsley, when he lost control on a right hand bend as he travelled in the direction of Sheffield.

Police said the driver suffered severe spinal injuries in the smash and was taken to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, where he has been detained.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of theft, drink driving and driving whilst disqualified.

n Police are looking for witnesses to the collision at 1.30am on Sunday May 1 or anyone who saw the manner of driving beforehand.
