A man was rescued from his burning home in Sheffield after firefighters found him hanging out of his attic window.

The man, aged in his 50s, was trapped in his home on Buttermere Road, Carterknowle, by smoke and flames from a blaze downstairs.

When crews arrived they found him leaning out of his window surrounded by smoke.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the burning property to extinguish the flames and led the trapped occupant to safety.

They gave him oxygen in the house until it was deemed safe to leave.

He was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and shock.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway but it started in the lounge and engulfed the room.

Firefighters said the man in the house woke up smelling smoke.

Watch manager James Moll, of Central fire station, said: “There was a smoke alarm on the ground floor but it is not clear if it went off. There needs to be one on every level and they need to be tested weekly.”
