Man, aged 81, killed crossing road in Barnsley

A man, aged 81, was killed after being struck by a car as he crossed a road in Barnsley.

The OAP was crossing Barnsley Road, Silkstone, when he was hit by a silver Peugeot panel van outside the Texaco petrol station.

He suffered a serious head injury and was given emergency treatment at the scene but could not be saved.

South Yorkshire Police said the van, driven by a 39-year-old man, was travelling in the direction of Hoylandswaine at the time of the collision.

Witnesses or anyone who saw the van or pedestrian before the collision at 9.35am yesterday should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
