Make most of the post office

PEOPLE Power is alive and well in Sheffield. And well done to the folk who are responsible!

After a year without a post office, the people of Darnall will have the service returned to them next week, courtesy of hard-working and inspirational members of Darnall Forum.

For they are to run the business as a registered charity, becoming the first in a UK city to do so.

This is a tremendously significant step in the social archives of Sheffield, and could lead the way to more people taking the initiative and rolling up their sleeves to run businesses on behalf of their communities.

It also shows that the idea of Community Assemblies, which have their own budgets to target local needs, really can make a difference. For the local assembly helped fund the scheme.

People are always quick to complain when local services are taken from them. And rightly so.

But those prepared and with the capabilities to do something about it are few and far between.

The people of Darnall are fortunate that they have their local forum, a registered charity, on hand to make sure the community does not lose out.

We would now urge people in the suburb to make sure they use the post office and show that it is the vital part of their neighbourhood which they argued it was when opposing closure proposals.

People are happy to help the police

ANOTHER good example of community spirit rising to the surface is to be found at the other end of Sheffield, in Commonside and Walkley where the neighbourhood was plastered with posters alerting residents to the activites of a suspected burglar and asking them to be alert and contact police if they have any information.

Police, however, were luke warm to the idea, fearing that it was a step too close to encouraging people to take the law into their own hands.

The public response has been one of encouragement. There is great support for those behind the posters and we feel this represents a groundswell of support from the ordinary man and woman in the street to help the police catch those who would break into our homes.

Book the festival

THEY'RE the write stuff - the stars of the written word who will be heading to Sheffield for this year's Off The Shelf literary festival.

Top writers ranging form veteran polician Tony Benn and former Blair aide Alastair Campbell to funny lady Jenny Eclair and historian David Starkey are among those lined up to appear in the city. It truly is a stellar line up offering something for anyone who enjoys good writing.

And it is a great excuse NOT to stay home and curl up with a good book!
