Magna-ificent wildlife photos in science musuem competition - SLIDESHOW

WILDLIFE lovers needn't tune into Wildlife on One or David Attenborough's latest nature series. – South Yorkshire has its own team of wildlife lovers behind the camera.

Hundreds of budding photographers entered a regional wildlife photography contest run by Magna Science Adventure Centre and the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham.

Entries numbered 233, and more than 3,650 votes were cast to select the talented seven winners.

Glynn Hudson from Whiston, Rotherham, won the over-16s' Nature Reserves category for his picture of a short-eared owl in Silverwood pit reserve.

Capturing the owl in such a striking pose was not easy, said Glynn.

"Short-eared owls move from their breeding grounds in winter to areas where food is abundant," he said. "They hunt over grassland looking for rodents. This owl had just pounced – so I crept up and took the picture."

Jeff Holland from Harlington, Doncaster, won the prize for best Nature Close-Up image in the over-16 section. He took more than 50 photographs of a bee collecting nectar from a flower in his garden to get the perfect shot.

Garry Jackson won the over-16s' Urban and Garden Wildlife category with a picture of a dandelion clock, shot at Litton Mill in Derbyshire.

And young Nathan Green from Rotherham won the under-16 Urban and Garden Wildlife category.

His image of a butterfly, taken at Sewerby Hall, Bridlington, impressed the judges with its attention to detail.

Nathan said his photograph demonstrated "the importance of growing butterfly-friendly plants in our gardens, so everyone can see their delicate structure".

Photographer Paul Hobson, a member of the judging panel involved in compiling a shortlist of entries, said: "The great part about this competition was the public were able to vote on their favourite image."
