In reply to Imam Arshad, re the Madrassa system and his castigating of Prime Minister Cameron’s speech on the subject. (The Star, October, 28).
Firstly, why isn’t our own Christian education system good enough for you?
People that come to live in our Christian country are supposed to integrate aren’t they?
Secondly, weren’t many of the Taliban educated in Saudi-financed madrassas in Pakistan that teach Wahhabism?
This is a particularly austere and rigid form of Islam which is rooted in Saudi Arabia.
Around the world, Saudi wealth and charities contributed to an explosive growth of madrassas during the Afghan jihad against the Soviets.
During that war, (1979-1989), a new kind of madrassa emerged in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, not so much concerned about scholarship as making war on infidels.
The enemy then was the Soviet Union, today it’s America and the West.
Hence terrorist acts that occur and the many that are thwarted.
Or maybe I am looking at the madrassa system like Cameron, wrongly?
