The M1 motorway in north Derbyshire has just re-opened - 11 hours after a collision involving two lorries.

Emergency services were alerted to the smash just north of junction 29A, near Staveley, at 3.30am today.

Two lorries collided - leaving one man seriously injured.

He is in a critical condition in the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

The northbound carriageway of the M1 was closed between junctions 29 and 30 until the lorries were removed from the crash scene and a fuel spillage was cleared up.

The road closure caused chaos as motorists were forced to find alternative routes.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the smash is under way.
