Planned road closures on the M1 have been amended after proposals for a rail strike mean there is an embargo on works to the network.

The closures relate to works to Junction 37 of the M1 and adjacent roads. The closures began on May 16 at 8pm, and continue at 8pm until 5.30am every night.

The roads will be open over the Spring Bank holiday, with closures beginning again at 8pm on May 28, where the closures will again continue every night from 8pm to 5.30am until May 30.

Barnsley Council has received funding from the Department for Transport Local Pinch Point Fund to install traffic signals on the roundabout at Junction 37, to improve capacity.

Part of the scheme is to resurface a short length of Dodworth Road; Whinby Road, and on both sides of the dual carriageway including the first roundabout.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “This work will help make sure the right transport infrastructure is in place, which is crucial in ensuring Barnsley can facilitate economic growth – one of the council’s key priorities.

“We apologise to road users for any inconvenience caused.

We are seeking to minimise disruption by undertaking the work during planned closures, advertised in advance.”
