LITTLE leapling Elicia Herring celebrates turning four today - but officially she is aged just one!
The blonde birthday girl was born on February 29, 2008 - so this is the first time her real special day has come around.
And she will be celebrating with a princess-themed party to mark the very rare occasion.
Proud mum Donna Herring and dad Stuart Davies, of Lupton Road, Lowedges, Sheffield, said: “We’re going to make it extra special because it’s Elicia’s first real birthday.
“In the past we’ve always celebrated on the weekend before or after.
“Someone told me that if you are born before 12noon on February 29 then you should celebrate on February 28, and after noon it should be March 1.
“Elicia was born at 10.47am, but the last few years we have celebrated on March 1, or before the end of February.
“When she was born we were willing her to come in February, because March is such a busy month for birthdays in our family. And then she chose that day of all days!”
Elicia, who lives with her two brothers Reece, seven, and Callum, 11, was born at the Jessop Wing in Sheffield.
“I remember going into hospital and the topic of leap year babies was on the telly,” said Donna, 32.
“There were 80-year-old twins saying they were only 20 really! I don’t know anybody personally who was born on a leap year so it does seem to be quite rare.
“But when we went to register Elicia’s birth, the registrar did a double take because she had been born on February 29 too!”
The novelty of her unusual birthday hasn’t quite sunk in for the nursery school pupil.
Donna said: “We have talked to her about it but I’m not sure about her level of understanding yet!”
