Corporal Tom Pledger, of 148 Barnsley Squadron, landed the rare opportunity to take a flight in a Hawk T1 aircraft at RAF Valley, North Wales.

A young Barnsley air cadet took to the skies for a special flight in North Wales.

Corporal Tom Pledger, from 148 Barnsley Squadron, was selected to fly in a Hawk T1 aircraft after being voted the best cadet during the squadron’s annual camping trip.

Grasping the rare opportunity with both hands, the 15-year-old, underwent a medical, kit fitting and briefing before jetting off down the runway at RAF Valley in Holyhead.

Tom, from Sheffield, who attends Ecclesfield School, soared across the skies above the Welsh valleys and was even put in control of the aircraft by the pilot for a short period.

Rachael Parkes, deputy training officer at 148 Barnsley Squadron, said: “Tom loved every minute of the flight.

“It was an incredibly rare opportunity organised by our commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Andy Williams. For Tom it was a really great experience as he would like to join the RAF in the future, either as a pilot or in an engineering role.”
