DIAMOND sweethearts Edna and Patrick Murphy have sailed into their 60th year of marriage after meeting by a river.

Doncaster-born Edna was asked to go for a riverside walk by a young man while visiting family in Oxford but the sparks flew between her and his friend Patrick, who was in the RAF, instead.

They wrote to each in a long distance courtship before tying the knot on December 15, 1951 at Adwick Parish Church.

Now proud parents and grandparents living on Quarry Vale Road, Sheffield, the 82-year-olds celebrated their milestone with family on Thursday.

Edna said: “We wouldn’t have met if Patrick hadn’t failed his tele-printer exam on one mistake, he’d have been in Egypt, so I was very lucky.

“Trust and love is the secret to a long marriage, we’re not always compatible but love each other through everything.

“I’ve always done what my mother said and not gone to bed on an argument.”
