They called it puppy love, but it is not just your Valentine vying for affection today – these pooches are also after your heart.

The Sheffield branch of the RSPCA is using the most romantic time of year to find a new home for one of its most misunderstood breeds.

With the sanctuary on Stadium Way, Attercliffe, currently ‘overrun’, rescue workers are calling on residents to Love-a-Bull.

There are more than 10 bulldogs, many of whom have suffered ill-treatment, all ready to be re-homed this Valentine’s Day.

From steady softy Biff to bubbly Mia, the RSPCA is ready to match up canines with their ideal companions.

Tony Benham, RSPCA Sheffield animal care manager, said: “There are a lot of misconceptions about these dogs, but they have so much to give.

“Bulls are eager to please and give you all the companionship and love you could ask for.

“They might not be the fastest, or most graceful, but they are one of the most dependable, and their size and personality contribute to the reasons people love them.

“At our centre we have some marvellous dogs who deserve a second chance in life. They are utterly lovable.”

Staff are also using today’s celebration to encourage people to donate to the RSPCA in Sheffield.

Collections will be taking place at Pets at Home stores across the city tomorrow.

Stella White, RSPCA Sheffield branch manager, said: “We hope people will give generously this Valentine’s weekend.”
