Lotto boost for groups

A HOST of South Yorkshire projects have received a cash boost in the latest round of a Big Lottery Fund grants scheme.

The money was distributed as part of the Awards for All programme, with nine schemes across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster receiving grants of up to 10,000.

One of the beneficiaries was the Rotherham-based POP's Summer Camp, which received 10,000 to buy tools to run a pilot scheme for young people aged 11 to 16 from families living on a low income.

Youngsters will be able to try a host of activities at the camp, including abseiling, canoeing, go-carting, orienteering, rafting and survival skills.

The aim is to improve their life skills and developments, whilst having lots of fun.

Adrian Harvey, from the camp, said: "Many of our staff are from a scouting background and take a very active role in the personal development of young people. We believe in getting the kids outdoors and active as there is so much more to life than just sitting at home on a laptop or mobile phone playing games.

"The difference we see in the kids after being on camp is significant. It gives us a real sense of achievement when we have been instrumental in giving them more self independence, confidence and the right attitude to get stuck in and attack life head on with a positive mental attitude and a larger scope on what life has to offer.

"The Awards for All grant has helped us get the start we needed with being able to set up our pilot scheme for the kids.

"Without this help I am sure our dreams and that of the young people taking part would never be realised."

St Bede's Catholic Primary School in Rotherham also received 10,000, while the Friendly Training Company received 9,622.

Two Sheffield groups also benefited.

Grants for 10,000 were handed to IBK Initiatives Limited - an organisation which works with groups and individuals to promote inclusion - and Burngreave Youth Development Centre.

In Barnsley, 9,214 was awarded to DEVC Limited in Barnsley, an organisation which offers community-based training and resources to the Dearne Valley public.

Birdwell Methodist Church was handed 9,950 and South Hiendley Junior, Infant and Early Years School was given 8,000.
