ANGRY residents in a village hit by a huge colliery landslide have launched a campaign to block the number of lorries in the area in the wake of the disaster.

Residents of Hatfield are worried about the number of HGVs using the village’s streets following the February landslip which destroyed the railway line between Doncaster and Scunthorpe.

The line is still undergoing repairs and is not scheduled to re-open before the summer.

Pit owner Hargreaves Services has been using lorries rather than trains to transport coal from the pit to the motorway network and to nearby power stations.

But Hatfield Town councillor Mick Glynn is now campaigning for a curfew, as well as a new route to take them away from the narrow streets within the village.

He said: “The lorries are coming through at all hours and they make a lot of noise as they rumble through. People can’t sleep and they are also dangerous.

“The route they are taking along Station Road is totally inappropriate, the roads are too narrow and there’s a risk of someone getting injured.”

Coun Glynn has called for a meeting with pit chiefs to discuss a different route, voluntary speed limits of 20mph during the disruption and an 8pm to 8am curfew to protect villagers.

Michael O’Sullivan, from Hargreaves Services, said: “The mine has continued to produce coal since the landslide and we have to have a way of getting it out to our customers.

“With the situation with the railway line being closed, road is the only viable alternative.”
