Long-awaited Sheffield tram-train arrives in the UK

The UK’s first tram-train has arrived in England and is on its way to Sheffield.

The first of seven tram-trains, which will travel between Sheffield and Rotherham, arrived in Southampton this weekend.

The tram-trains are bing built in Spain and will the city’s tram routes and Network Rail lines.

The long-awaited scheme – first announced in 2009 – has been delayed several times but is now due to be up and running by early 2017.

Three vehicles will run an hour, linking Sheffield, Meadowhall and Rotherham from 2017.

The Department for Transport hopes the two-year pilot scheme will be rolled out to other places in the country.

The tram-train will be transported up the M1 motorway before arriving in Sheffield on Tuesday.
