Woman’s body to be exhumed from grave

A WOMAN’S body is to be exhumed from a graveyard in Barnsley - closing a nearby road for a day-and-a-half.

Barnsley Road, in Silkstone, will be shut from midday today until tomorrow evening, with no vehicle or pedestrian access to the street allowed between Silkstone Lane and Vicarage Farm Court.

The local woman - who has not been identified - was in her 30s when she died last year, and was buried in the cemetery at All Saints and St James’ Church.

The operation is taking place as part of a police investigation, on behalf of the coroner, to establish how the woman died.

A post-mortem examination conducted after the woman’s death proved inconclusive.

Following the exhumation, a full forensic post-mortem will be carried out.

South Yorkshire Police say the new examination is not currently part of any criminal investigation.

The dig is taking place overnight, and an area of the cemetery close to Barnsley Road will be cordoned off.

A white forensic tent will be put up over the grave to screen it from public view.
