Winter weather deaths outrage

SOUTH Yorkshire MP Dan Jarvis has branded deaths due to cold weather a ‘national scandal’.

The Labour MP for Barnsley Central spoke as temperatures have plummeted below freezing.

Mr Jarvis challenged Prime Minister David Cameron after a report from the Office of National Statistics which revealed 24,000 people died due to cold weather last winter.

The majority of those who died were aged over 75.

Mr Jarvis said: “Cold winter deaths continue to be a national scandal which needs to be taken more seriously by this Government.

“It is inexcusable, unacceptable and intolerable we cannot keep our elderly warm.

“This week temperatures have plummeted again.

“People across Barnsley will be struggling to stay warm and due to soaring heating bills and poor insulation. This will be an uphill struggle for many.”
