AN ONLINE tributes page has been set up by his Sheffield church to murdered organist Alan Greaves.
The special section of the St Saviour’s website has been created by vicar Canon Simon Bessant, who hopes it will bring together in one place worldwide condolences and prayers so they can be seen by Mr Greaves’ widow Maureen and family.
Canon Bessant said: “Lots of people have signed a book of condolences at the church, and put comments on various websites.
“The church has opened this page to bring together those messages in one place, and we would welcome everyone to add to it.”
Comments so far include a message from friend Rita Cooper who said: “I’m glad I knew Alan. He is greatly missed. In his quiet way he left a big hole in the church.
“I don’t think Alan would have enjoyed the fame he now has, as we are all finding it difficult. God bless you, Alan - we will look after Maureen for you.”
Jacquelyn Poarch wrote: “I cherish the Hymns Ancient and Modern which Alan gave me so long ago. I am so glad I had the honour of knowing him, even if only for a brief time.”
Another poster, Lisa, said: “Alan, you were a true gentlemen, and many children of High Green had the pleasure of knowing you, giving up your time which will be memories forever.
“So patient, with such a calm endearing voice and a wonderful smile, you will never know how popular you were. I salute you good sir, goodnight and RIP.”
Louise wrote: “I had the pleasure of meeting Alan during the time Maureen and I trained together as Church Army evangelists. He was a lovely, kind, supportive Christian man and will be missed by all of us who knew him.”
Ashley and Sharon added: “We may not understand why Alan left this earth in such a way but, little by little, we begin to remember not just that Alan died, but that Alan lived, and Alan’s life gave us memories too wonderful to forget.”
Mr Greaves was killed as he made his way to St Saviour’s Church on Mortomley Lane to play the organ at a communion service on Christmas Eve. Two men have been charged with his murder.
Hundreds of people are expected to attend a funeral service at the church on Wednesday, February 6, at noon. Bishop of Sheffield Dr Steven Croft will attend, Canon Bessant will give the address, and a city choir is planning to sing.
