Heavy downpours have led to weather experts issuing a severe rain warning for South Yorkshire today, with a possibility of flooding.

The MET Office issued a yellow weather warning for severe rain across the region including Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley effective from 11am today.

The weather authority said flooding could occur in some areas due to intense downpours.

It said: “The public should be aware of the potential for localised flooding due to the intensity of the downpours although the location of the heaviest rainfall remains uncertain.

“Some places within the broad warning area will miss the worst of the storms, but where they occur they could produce in excess of 20mm of rain in an hour, with one or two places perhaps seeing more than 40mm within two or three hours, with localised flooding a possibility.”

The rain is expected to subside by 9pm and there are currently no warnings in place for Sunday.
