A SURGE in thefts in catalytic converters in Doncaster has sparked a warning from police.
Officers in the borough have been warning motorists about the risk of catalytic converter theft, particularly if their vehicle has large ground clearance.
Thieves in the area are targeting the catalytic converters – located in the exhaust system under the vehicle – because of the high value of these as replacement parts.
A catalytic converter helps to reduce the emissions coming out of a vehicle and makes them safer to the atmosphere. The high cost for replacement parts have resulted in an increase in thefts of catalytic converters across Doncaster.
Larger vehicles are particularly vulnerable as the converters are more accessible.
Superintendent Eddie Murphy said: “To reduce the risk of theft of your vehicles catalytic converter being stolen, we advise that you park your vehicle in a garage whenever possible or try to park in well-lit busy area. Motorists with a large ground clearance can also mark the catalytic converter with a unique mark, so that if it is removed by thieves it will be easier to trace.”
