Warning after raiders steal CCTV cameras

Thieves have stolen thousands of pounds worth of security cameras from outside Mexborough pubs.

More than £8,000 worth of CCTV gear was taken from outside The Old Market Hall and Montague Arms within the space of a month.

Montague landlord Ray Dowen, aged 59, chairman of Mexborough, Conisbrough and Swinton Pub Watch, fears thieves took them with the intention of breaking in later while the cameras are down.

He said pubs could not afford to be regularly having to buy new cameras.

He said: “The cameras will be replaced and thankfully we have not had another break-in since they were taken.

“But it does make you wonder if they plan to come back later and break in when we can’t catch them on camera, that is my main concern.”

Officers are also probing the theft of cameras from outside The Old Market Hall on Friday, January 18, at 4am.

Eddie Gershon, a spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, which owns the pub, said: “We will be replacing those cameras in due course. However, at the moment the area can still be monitored by the existing cameras.”

n Contact police on 101 with any information.
