The incident happened outside the John O Gaunt pub and Gleadless Valley Methodist Church at around 11.55am.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

Police have cordoned off the area and officers flooded the estate as the investigation got underway.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “At approximately 11.55am, today, Thursday, February 21, police received reports that a woman had been attacked on Blackstock Road in Sheffield.

“The woman, in her 40s, sustained stab wounds and died.

“A 44-year-old man, who is thought to be known to the woman, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.”
