VIDEO - Snow comes to Sheffield

THE first light snowflakes began falling in Sheffield this afternoon.

Snow has already gripped several parts of the country and the met office has issued a warning to the Yorkshire and Humber region, predicting plenty of light to moderate snow over the next four days.

Combined with freezing temperatures and strong winds, driving conditions are expected to turn hazardous over the weekend and members of the public are being urged to take extra care.

The warning has sparked action from the council, who are gritting priority routes in advance

Mukhtar Tufail and his wife Iffat Yasmin spent yesterday evening spreading grit on pavements around the Main Road area of Darnall, where they live.

Mr Tufail, a legal adviser for Sheffield and Rotherham District Council of Muslims, said: “We have been spreading grit along the pavements and we also take it upon ourselves to see if all the elderly residents okay and whether they need us to grit their paths, too, so they can get out.

“It is a rewarding job and feels like you are helping your community.”
