Sheffield’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual community united in a protest against the staging of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The protest and one minute’s noise this evening coincided with the event’s opening ceremony in Russia.

An LGBT Sheffield spokesman said: “We are holding the demonstration to protest against the Olympics being held in a country where LGBT people are subjected to persecution and government-led hatred and oppression.

“We believe the Olympic ideals of ‘a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles’ are incompatible with a country where the human right to freely form relationships and live according to one’s sexual orientation and gender identity is denied.”
