VIDEO: Rotherham house on fire after lightning strike

Waiting for Video...

Captured on video - these are the dramatic moments after a lightning strike started a major blaze in a South Yorkshire house.

Flames can be seen billowing from the roof of the house in Carson Avenue, Laughton Common, near Rotherham.

The video was taken minutes after the property was hit by a lightning strike shortly before 6pm on Saturday evening.

Four fire crews from Maltby, Mansfield Road, Rotherham and Aston stations along with an Aerial Ladder Platform were sent to the scene, with hose reels used to extinguish the blaze.

Structural engineers are now working with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to determine the extent of the damage following the partial collapse of the roof in the blaze.

Station manager Simon Rodgers said: “This appears to be a freak accident caused by a lightning strike, thankfully the family were out at the time, or this could have been a very serious incident.”

*See tomorrow’s Star for an exclusive interview with the family who own the house.
