Mission Christmas, The Star-backed Hallam FM and Magic AM Cash For Kids gifts appeal, today got top marks from staff and pupils at the school featured on TV’s Educating Yorkshire.

Our Christmas campaign aims to deliver more than £800,000 worth of presents and raise £60,000 to distribute to children’s charities and vulnerable children in the region.

Last year it helped more than 17,000 children receive presents worth over £610,000 in a record-breaking year.

Now our efforts are being supported by the school at the centre of Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire.

Teachers, school staff and pupils at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury are collecting gifts for the appeal.

“I’ve started the ball rolling already,” said headteacher Jonny Mitchell, a dad of three himself.

“I’ve got together personally a bunch of gifts that we would normally have bought for my own children. They’ll get plenty. Everybody should get behind this.”

English teacher Matthew Burton, assistant head, added: “It’s Yorkshire, it’s local, and it makes a difference to people’s lives.”

Schools, businesses, organisations and individuals around the region are giving similar backing, with 210 supporters and 200-drop off points this year.

Gifts are flooding in to The Star shop drop-off in York Street. Front counter manager Debbie Ogden and colleague Angela Burgess said not only toys, but gifts for older teenagers too, are being donated.

Weight Watchers, with 130 meetings in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham, has Mission Christmas drop-off points and a Facebook page. And Sheffield estate agent Blundells has supported the appeal with Christmas parties at its 11 sales offices and a Walk to Work In Your Onesie fundraiser.

The Star is media partner for Mission Christmas, which is also in partnership with primary sponsor The Moor Market and supported by Best Solicitors, Foresters, Sheffield City Council, Blundells, Weightwatchers, The Priory shopping centre in Worksop, Warburtons signs, Reeds Rains, Highwoods Primary School, Insured Health, Cresco Industrial Supplies Ltd, Hope City Church, Meganursery, Bupa Dental Centre, D’Michael’s, Crystal Peaks and FrenchGate.
