VIDEO: Have-a-go heroes stop Sheffield bike thief

DRAMATIC new CCTV footage of two have-a-go-heroes who stopped a violent man from stealing a bicycle has been released by police.

They are hoping it will help to catch the would-be-thief who struck at Sheffield railway station.

VIDEO: Press the play button to watch the CCTV footage of the thief being dragged off the bike.

British Transport Police say the man assault the owner as he tried to stop him.

The victim – a 30-year-old local man – was returning to the cycle rack at the station where he had secured his bike, only to see a man riding away on it.

He gave chase and managed to grab the man who then assaulted him with the bike lock before attempting to flee.

Another member of the public got involved, grabbed the thief and pulled him off the bike, but he managed to get away.

Det Con Bob Hunt, who is investigating the incident, said: “If you know the man we’d like to hear from you.”

He added: “The victim and member of the public showed great courage and managed to foil this attempted theft. Despite being hit by the metal bike lock, luckily the victim didn’t sustain any serious injuries.”

* Anyone with information about the man or incident, at 6pm on Thursday, October 30, should call British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
