A footbridge over one of Doncaster town centre’s busiest roads has collapsed.

The bridge over Cleveland Street fell down this morning, and police have urged motorists to avoid the area.

Officials from Doncaster Council highways department say the bridge collapsed at approximately 11am after it was struck by a lorry with a crane mounted on the back .

The driver of the lorry has been taken to hospital.

Gill Gillies, Assistant Director for Environment, said: “Council teams are on-site with the emergency services. We are advising transport providers and putting diversions in place around the affected area.

“We hope that the bridge will be removed from the road later today, however, there is likely to be considerable traffic disruption until this time.

“I would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience while this incident is resolved.”

Buses are being diverted.

A spokesman for First said: “Cleveland Street inbound to Doncaster, service 14 is not being allowed by police to serve St James Street in Balby Flats. Therefore service 14 will divert as all other Balby Road services via Carr House Road and Trafford Way.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Cleveland Street in Doncaster is currently closed in both directions after a collision at around 10.30am. Please avoid the area if possible.”
