A WARNING has been issued after a bogus female police officer gained access to the homes of women in Doncaster – and issued one of them with a ‘caution’.
South Yorkshire Police are urging residents to be vigilant after they received two reports from Adwick-le-Street of a woman allegedly impersonating a police officer in order to obtain bank details.
She claimed to be a police officer investigating TV licensing irregularities.
The first incident occurred on Ashburton Close at around 5.30pm on Friday, December 7, and the second on Falcon Close on Wednesday, December 12, at about 7.30pm.
It is believed she went to the first house and, to gain entry, told the occupier she was a police officer from TV Licensing.
She then issued the female with a police caution and took her bank details before leaving.
On the second occasion, she left empty-handed but she showed the victims a badge with the letters SYP, which was inside a black leather wallet.
The woman was in her 30s to 40s, with shoulder-length blonde hair, of medium build, 5ft 4ins and was wearing a black trouser suit and a red waist-length coat. At the second house she was wearing a fur hat.
Detective Constable Andy Hatton said: “We have seen an increase in bogus callers in Doncaster this month. Some are pretending to be carers, others are asking for money for elderly relatives.
“We would encourage all residents to be vigilant about any callers to their homes, including anyone claiming to be a police officer. If in doubt, do not give out any personal or bank details and contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 to establish whether the visit is genuine.”
