Two police car crashes within minutes

SOUTH Yorkshire Police are reviewing their driving policy after two police cars responding to emergencies in Sheffield were involved in collisions within minutes of one another on the same street.

In the first crash, at 10.47am last Friday, a 33-year-old biker who was riding on a white Yamaha YZF motorcycle was thrown into the air after he struck a marked police car as it turned out of Neepsend Lane and onto Penistone Road.

He suffered a broken collarbone, a fractured finger and concussion, and was taken to the Northern General Hospital.

Only minutes later, at 11.09am, a 74-year-old man driving a white Peugeot 106 was in collision with a Ford Focus police car as it attended an incident on Penistone Road.

Both cars hit the central reservation at the junction of Albert Terrace Road, and the Peugeot driver suffered severe bruising to his chest and forearms.

His passenger, a 63-year-old man from Sheffield, suffered a fracture to his sternum and bruising.

The police officer suffered whiplash and back pain.

All were taken to the Sheffield Northern General Hospital.

Both matters have been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

South Yorkshire Police said they could not comment on whether the two incidents were linked, as the matters were under review by the IPCC.

A force spokesman said both police vehicles’ lights and sirens were on.

Anyone with information about either incident should call 101 and quote incident number 334.
