THE WIFE of a Sheffield church organist who died after he was allegedly attacked on Christmas Eve said today her faith had helped her deal with her ordeal ‘immensely’.
Maureen Greaves was speaking as she left Sheffield Magistrates Court after the two men accused of killing her husband made their first court appearance.
As she left court with Detective Superintendent Matt Fenwick, who is leading the murder inquiry, she said: “Just to say it’s wonderful they’ve made arrests. Justice will be done.
Asked if her faith was helping her deal with her ordeal, Mrs Greaves said: “Immensely. The support of the congregation and the police has been outstanding.
“I just want to pay tribute for all they’ve done and for the sensitivity with which they’ve dealt with their case.”
Jonathan Lesley Bowling, aged 22, of Carwood Way, Pitsmoor and Ashley Michael Foster, 21, of Wesley Road, High Green, appeared for the five minute hearing wearing navy blue t-shirts and tracksuit bottoms.
They spoke only to confirm their names, ages and dates of birth.
David Marshall, prosecuting, said they were charged with the murder of Mr Greaves, a 68-year-old grandfather, on Christmas Eve which was an indictable only offence and the case would have to be heard at Sheffield Crown Court.
Mr Greaves died three days after he was attacked as he made his way to a midnight communion service at St Saviour’s Church, near his home in High Green, Sheffield.
The men were remanded in custody by the magistrates and the case was adjourned. No applications for bail were made.
They will appear at Sheffield Crown Court on January 18.
