THE widow of a Sheffield church organist who died after he was attacked on Christmas Eve was in court as two men appeared accused of his murder.
Maureen Greaves said her faith had helped her deal with her ordeal ‘immensely’ as she left Sheffield Magistrates’ Court with police yesterday.
She was speaking after Jonathan Lesley Bowling, aged 22 and Ashley Michael Foster, 21, made their first court appearance.
As she left court with Det Supt Matt Fenwick, who is leading the murder inquiry, Mrs Greaves said: “Just to say it’s wonderful they’ve made arrests.
“Justice will be done.”
Asked if her faith was helping her, Mrs Greaves said: “Immensely. The support of the congregation and the police has been outstanding.
“I just want to pay tribute for all they’ve done and for the sensitivity with which they’ve dealt with the case.”
Jonathan Lesley Bowling, of Carwood Way, Pitsmoor and Ashley Michael Foster, of Wesley Road, High Green, appeared in the dock for the five minute hearing wearing navy blue T-shirts and tracksuit bottoms.
They spoke only to confirm their names, ages and dates of birth.
David Marshall, prosecuting, said they were charged with the murder of Mr Greaves, a 68-year-old grandfather, on Christmas Eve, which would have to be heard at Sheffield Crown Court.
Mr Greaves died three days after he was attacked as he made his way to a midnight communion service at St Saviour’s Church, near his home in High Green, Sheffield.
The men were remanded in custody by the magistrates and the case was adjourned. No applications for bail were made.
Bowling and Foster will appear at Sheffield Crown Court next Friday, January 18.
