Page Hall Incident

Two men have been arrested over a mass brawl on a Sheffield street.

Officers started quizzing the pair – aged 27 and 28 – last night, over a fight in a Sheffield suburb plagued by community unrest.

They are being held on suspicion of violent disorder.

A third man was arrested, but later bailed pending further enquiries.

The brawl on Page Hall Road, Page Hall, involved about 25 men from two rival groups, is said to involve Roma Slovak and Yemeni residents.

Scores of onlookers came out of their homes as violence flared.

Police chiefs ordered a heightened presence on the streets last night in a bid to restore calm.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: Two men are currently in police custody being questioned by officers in connection to a disturbance in Page Hall.

“Reports were made to police at about 7.10pm on Monday of two groups of about 25 men fighting in the street on Page Hall Road, with a large number of people out on the street as bystanders.

“There was a police presence in the area throughout the evening with extra patrols, mounted officers and a high-visibility police presence in the area last night.

“An additional 100 hours are spent patrolling the area per week compared to last year, as well as a dedicated team of officers for Page Hall who are regularly available to provide a presence and reassurance to residents.

“There is continuous, ongoing work in the area and South Yorkshire Police is committed in finding resolutions to the concerns that are raised by communities and for anyone involved or affected.

“By working with partner agencies, including the local authority, environmental health, education, licensing and the voluntary sector, action is regularly taken to tackle a number of issues and problems and action will continue in the area to improve the quality of life for those living and working in Page Hall.”

The Pakistani Advice and Community Association said the disturbance stemmed from two teenagers having an altercation at a youth club earlier in the night.
