Tributes have been paid to the grandmother who made the ‘ultimate sacrifice’ when she gave her life for her family.

Shabina Begum, aged 53, escaped the inferno initially - but went back inside to try to rescue her daughter and three grandchildren.

Yesterday her elder daughter Nazia Parwaiz Kayani, aged 32, burst into tears as she recalled the ‘heroism’ of her mother.

Comforted by her devastated father Sultan Parwaiz Kayani, 61, Nazia said her family was enduring ‘a time of immense grief and utter shock’ – and thanked firefighters and paramedics for their ‘exhaustive efforts’ to revive her relatives on the night of the blaze.

She also revealed a cousin had joined her mum and ‘risked his own life’ in trying to save the family as flames raged inside the house.

He too entered the burning building to try to search for those trapped inside, but was beaten back by flames before firefighters arrived.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved family and their untimely passing has left an unimaginable void in our lives forever,” said Nazia.

“We hope that with the passage of time the shock may subside and the pain ease. We will always cherish our precious memories with heavy hearts.

“Our thoughts would be incomplete without mentioning the selfless heroism of my beloved mother, Shabina Begum, who went back into the house to try to rescue the family she adored. She made the ultimate sacrifice.

“My beautiful mum, my beautiful sister, my lovely nephews and my baby niece – you have gone from our lives but will never be forgotten.”

Nazia’s father wept as his daughter spoke.

Nazia added: “We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by our extended family, friends, neighbours and the people of Sheffield at a time of immense grief and utter shock at losing five of our dearly loved family members.”
