Tragic M18 crash motorist hit twice by oncoming vehicles

POLICE investigating the horror M18 smash which left a man dead on Friday morning are appealing for witnesses.

The 7am collision on the southbound stretch closed the road for hours when a motorist was struck twice after climbing out of his car following a crash.

Police said the 53-year-old got out of his blue Ford Focus which stopped at an angle in the middle lane following a crash between junctions two and three at Wadworth and Warmsworth, Doncaster.

A Ford Transit van then collided with the Focus’ rear and struck the motorist - and a white HGV and a blue HGV each also collided with the Transit before the blue HGV hit the Focus driver.

The fatally-injured man was trapped beneath the blue lorry, and another four vehicles ended up colliding. The dead man was from Gilberdyke in Humberside. None of the other drivers was from South Yorkshire.

A police spokesman said: “The 53-year-old sustained fatal injuries and five other people in the vehicles involved sustained a variety of minor whiplash injuries.”

Call 101 quoting incident 125 of February 8.
