A TRACTOR driver could hold vital clues to the level crossing tragedy in which youngster Emma Lifsey from Doncaster died.
Police believe a man may have been driving a tractor near to the crossing at Misson Springs shortly before the car in which Emma, four, was hit by a passenger train on the Doncaster to Lincoln line.
The tot, of Haxey, was airlifted to Sheffield Children’s Hopsital following Tuesday’s horror smash between Westwoodside and Finningley but died a few hours later from her injuries.
The driver of the car, a 67-year-old woman, is still recovering in hospital with serious neck injuries and bruising.
Detective Inspector Mick Jackson of British Transport Police said: “We believe that a man driving a tractor may have been close to the crossing prior to the collision.
He may have vital information which could assist our investigations into this tragic incident.”
BTP officers were called to the rail line at Beech Hill crossing, Springs Road shortly after 12.30pm on Tuesday after a black Volvo was hit by a single carriage East Midlands Trains service travelling between Lincoln and Doncaster.
The remote crossing, which has half barriers and flashing lights and sirens, is still being studied by officers and rail accident investigators trying to piece together the cause of the tragedy.
The police investigation into the incident is ongoing and a team of detectives is looking at how the vehicle came to be on the tracks.
