A man is fighting for his life after a rush-hour road crash in which two teenagers were also seriously injured – one of two collisions which caused traffic chaos in Sheffield.

The 52-year-old pedestrian was struck by a red Ford on Abbeydale Road, Abbeydale, and is in hospital with head, arm and rib injuries.
Two girls aged 16 and 14, who were with the man, suffered serious pelvic injuries.

Police closed Abbeydale Road at its junction with Broadfield Road, near the former Abbeydale Picture House, following the crash at 7.40am yesterday.

Commuter traffic and buses were diverted along Broadfield Road, causing lengthy delays. The road was re-opened at around 12.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said: “Three pedestrians and a car were involved in a collision in Abbeydale Road at about 7.40am yesterday morning.

“A 52-year-old man is in a life-threatening condition and two girls suffered serious pelvic injuries.”

The second collision, involving four vehicles, was at the Mosborough junction of Sheffield Parkway at 7.50am, and also caused lengthy delays. Nobody was injured.
