Text issues to transport police

A NEW phone number has been launched for passengers in South Yorkshire to text reports of incidents to British Transport Police.

The new number – 61016 – is for non-emergency incidents.

Chief Supt Terry Nicholson said: “We aim to be as open and responsive as possible and this is the next step. Text messaging is a quick and everyday way to communicate and passengers want to be able contact us this way.

“By encouraging passengers to report incidents via text, we hope we will get a more complete picture of the sort of low level but common incidents that affect people’s journeys.”

There were 1,893 incidents reported to British Transport Police in Sheffield last year and 1,516 in Doncaster.
