People in Oughtibridge were awoken by an explosion early this morning during a fire at a refrigeration distribution business.
Some ten vehicles at Samples Express on Oughtibridge Lane were destroyed by a blaze and there was at least one explosion caused by the flames meeting the vehicles’ refrigeration gas.
Firefighters were called at 3.30am following reports of smoke in the area. Further calls while crews were en route reported the explosion.
Appliances from Rivelin, Elm Lane and Tankersley attended the scene and spent about four hours bringing the situation under control.
A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “There was damage to all ten vehicles that the business owned. All will be written off.
“The fire had also spread into a garage/out house.”
Some damage was also caused to the main building as the fire made its way through two windows.
Police shut down Oughtibridge Lane during the incident as fire crews’ water froze across the road in the cold weather, causing hazardous conditions.
An investigation found the fire was started deliberately.
