Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield has told Parliament about four female Hallam University students who faced a catalogue of problems from their landlord.
Calling for legislation to regulate the private rented sector, he told fellow MPs about the four women students who came to see him last week.
“They faced a catalogue of problems when they collected the keys for their new home,” he said. “The house was filthy, full of rubbish, mattresses were blood and faeces stained, there was no carbon monoxide detector, and taps and toilet seats did not fit correctly.”
But he told MPs that, though the house was uninhabitable, the students were refused a rent refund.
Speaking after the debate Mr Blomfield said: “There’s a clear need for Government to act to protect tenants. We need to see an end to extortionate fees, disgraceful neglect, and callous disregard of tenants.”
