Stories shared as readers enjoy Star history day

The history of Newfield Green, Heeley and the Gleadless Valley was put under the spotlight at our Retro event yesterday.

Scores of readers turned out to get involved after we joined forces with Gleadless Valley Local History Group.

It was a chance for people to swap stories, share photos, and bring back memories of how things used to be in the neighbourhood.

Retro editor Nancy Fielder shared some of the most interesting stories from The Star’s 125-year history.

Readers had also been invited to take along their own photos and memories for us to print in Retro.

Nancy said: “These events are becoming really popular and it is always nice to see so many people interested in local history and supporting what we do at The Star.

“Gleadless Valley Local History Group does a lot of work investigating the past and I am sure it found a few new supporters yesterday.

“Thanks to everyone who came along - keep an eye out for more Retro events coming soon.”

n See next Saturday’s Retro for photos and more stories from the day.
