Steel firm saves the day in town

HUNDREDS of homes and businesses in Sheffield were plunged into darkness following a power cut.

A fault at a substation stopped electricity supplies in Stocksbridge and some surrounding villages yesterday afternoon.

The town’s Tata Steel plant stepped in and used its secondary connection to the National Grid to restore power in half of the homes affected.

Mark Broxholme, Managing Director of Speciality Steels, said: “At around 9pm on Wednesday a substation suffered what is called a flashover. This cut the supply to Stocksbridge and to part of the Tata Steel works.

“Our electrical engineers were able to switch to our alternate feed and then to connect this to the Stocksbridge line so power was restored to the town.”
